Welcome to Classical Essentials, a special Best of BaseCamp Live series! Over the years, we’ve had incredible conversations unpacking the foundational ideas of classical Christian education. In this series, we’re bringing back some of the most popular and essential episodes to help parents, educators, and school leaders better understand the core principles that make this movement so impactful.
In this episode, Dr. Chris Schlect, Senior Fellow of History and Director of Classical and Christian Studies at New St. Andrews College, tackles a common question: What is the difference between classical education, the liberal arts, and the humanities? These terms are often used interchangeably, but do they actually mean the same thing? Understanding these distinctions helps parents and educators make informed decisions about their children’s education and how it aligns with a biblical worldview.
Christopher Schlect, Ph.D., is the Director of the Classical and Christian Studies program at New Saint Andrews College, where he also serves on the faculty as Senior Fellow of History. His primary teaching areas at the College include courses in history, classical rhetoric, and related fields. Dr. Schlect has also taught advanced courses at Washington State University and Gordon College, and he has interpreted historical sites as a ranger for the U.S. National Park Service.
He remains active with his historical research related to American Protestantism in the early 20th century, and he serves classical and Christian schools around the country through his teaching, consulting, and training activities. Chris and his wife, Brenda, have five grown children, all products of a classical and Christian education, as are all their spouses. The number of their grandchildren continues to grow.
